Traffic Impact Studies

This service renders the traffic impact of change in land use resulting from new development and/or road infrastructure that impacts the Level of service as experienced by the road user, expressed in terms of delay and queue lengths. The Scope of Services includes quantifying existing traffic demand by traffic counts, surveying existing road infrastructure, calculating Trip Generation, assigning Traffic Flows to the road network, capacity analyses at intersections, evaluating road network and intersection layout and control improvements, and reporting with recommendations regarding improved road infrastructure to maintain or improve Levels of Service.

Intersection Control and Layout

This service entails site-specific corridor or network studies that aim to improve Levels of Service by introducing alternative types of intersection control and/or improved geometric layout. Types of control include priority control (Stop or Yield control), traffic circles (roundabouts), and, if warranted, traffic light control. Higher-order roads with large traffic demand may warrant grade separation by means of access or system interchanges. The service also includes a selection of services as listed under Traffic Impact Studies concluded with geometric design of the intersection, normally preliminary design followed by detail design and implementation should the project prove to be viable.

Parking Studies

This service focuses on the reduction of speed and improvement of safety, specifically on roads in activity areas. These studies aim to determine the parking demand of specific land use proposals, including all types of motorized (motor cars, LDVs, taxis, trucks, etc.) and non-motorized transport (pedestrians and bicycles). Actual peak hour parking demand and loading demand is determined either by modelling or surveys of peak parking accumulation. This demand is then compared with municipal parking requirements, which may require proposals for improvement. The studies also include geometric design of parking and loading bays, service isles, and access to ensure adequate manoeuvring space and safe integration of vehicle and pedestrian movement.

Services offered in the field of Traffic Engineering Services are: Traffic Impact Studies, Intersection Control and Layout, and Parking Studies. These services are normally required by Local, Provincial and National Road Authorities following proposed new development, changes to road network, rezoning, etc.
